The Federal Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to discriminate in housing-related transactions due to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, family status or disability. Further, Nevada law also prohibits discrimination against ancestry, sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.
Fair housing laws provide legal and administrative remedies for people experiencing housing discrimination. Silver State Fair Housing Council provides a variety of programs and services designed to assist community members in pursuing remedies to housing discrimination.
Not everything that appears to be discrimination is necessarily considered illegal discrimination. Often discrimination is subtle, while in other cases, it’s blatant.
Housing consumers who believe their fair housing rights have been violated can request assistance in filing housing discrimination complaints and referrals to appropriate resources. SSFHC works closely with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Nevada Equal Rights Commission to effectively refer bona fide complaints of housing discrimination.
